.org domains: price and rules
.org is a generic ending run by Public Interest Registry (PIR). PIR calls it the home for millions of nonprofit websites, and says anyone may register one. Here is what it costs at the registrars we checked and the rules that come with it.
The rules
- Registry
-
Public Interest Registry (PIR), the manager IANA lists for .org in its root zone database.

- RDAP lookups
-
Yes. IANA’s RDAP list has a server for .org, so its records can be read in a standard way, which is how this site and the shelf find expiry dates.

- Who can register
-
Anyone. PIR, the registry, says .ORG is an open and unrestricted domain: you do not have to be a nonprofit to register one.

- HTTPS rule
-
No. .org as a whole is not on the Chromium HSTS preload list, so browsers do not force HTTPS for every .org name. An individual domain can still be preloaded or send its own HSTS header.

- Accents and other scripts
-
Yes. The registry has lodged 28 language and script entries in IANA’s IDN repository, for example Spanish, German, Chinese, Japanese and Russian, so names with accents and other scripts can be registered within those tables. Your registrar may offer fewer.

- If it expires
-
ICANN’s typical gTLD lifecycle: after the expiry date there is an auto-renew grace period of 0 to 45 days when you can still renew, then a 30-day redemption grace period when the name can be restored, then 5 days of pending delete, after which the name is released for anyone to register. Your registrar’s own rules may differ.

| Registrar | First year | Renewal | Transfer | 3 years | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dynadot | — | $11.64 | — | — | |
| Porkbun | — | $11.84 | — | — |
USD, before tax, as each registrar published it on the date shown; the date links to the page we read. Three years is the first year plus two renewals. A dash means nobody has checked that price yet. Registrars run offers and charge more for premium names, so confirm the price at the registrar before you buy. We don’t sell domains and these links are not affiliate links.
